ClimateCHECK is pleased to announce that Robert Janzen, PhD, PAg, has joined the firm as Director of Western Canada. Rob has several years of experience as President of Agrologics Consulting Ltd., from which he brings highly technical expertise and experience concerning greenhouse gas (GHG) dynamics associated with agricultural and environmental systems to ClimateCHECK.
Rob’s education and research focused on the biological and physical controls on elemental cycling in soil. This foundation enables Rob to provide advanced quantification and verification of the emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) from agricultural and environmental systems, and the sequestration of carbon (C) in soil. These competencies in agricultural and environmental GHG dynamics are also essential to accurate life cycle analyses of bio-energy.
In his recent professional activity, Rob has specialized in GHG reduction/removal projects in agriculture. Rob worked as the independent consultant to the development of offset protocols for the federal and the Alberta offsets programs. This involved contributing to the development of the ‘Pork Protocol’ for the Pork Technical Working Group and also to the development of the ‘Default Tillage Protocol’ the Soil Management Technical Working Group. In these projects, Rob interacted closely with the environmental scientists gathering data of GHG emissions from agriculture in Canada and with the policy analysts compiling the GHG inventories and designing the offset programs. Rob also recently completed an assessment of the GHG implications of a federal program to promote perennial cover on marginal lands, and presently contributes to efforts to evaluate a simulation tool to predict C sequestration in soil.

Rob and his wife Janet are hobby farmers, raising pigs for a specialty market. Rob says, “This farming activity keeps me grounded — it reminds me that achieving environmental integrity in harmony with economic viability is both challenging and rewarding.”
