Standards Council of Canada selects the GHG Management Institute to deliver comprehensive GHG training to GHG accreditation team
Ottawa and Washington, DC – March 27, 2009 – ClimateCHECK and the GHG Management Institute are pleased to announce the Standards Council of Canada (www.scc.ca) has selected the GHG Management Institute to train staff on GHG inventory accounting, GHG project accounting and GHG verification.
The Standards Council of Canada is the top authority responsible for GHG standards in Canada, including implementation of the national accreditation system for GHG verification organizations based on ISO 14065 and ISO 14064.
“We are pleased the Institute has been selected again to support another GHG accreditation program”, stated Tom Baumann, CEO of ClimateCHECK and Director of Professional Programs at the GHG Management Institute “our work with Standards Council of Canada follows similar support being provided to the UNFCCC Joint Implementation program and the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) in the US.”
“The importance of training, accreditation and other supporting ‘market infrastructure’ is especially important to the success of the GHG and green markets”, stated Tom Baumann. “To put this issue into perspective, these markets have less than 10 years of track record, and although initiatives are started, there’s relatively little ‘market infrastructure’ to meet the demands of a low carbon economy projected to be in the trillions of dollars by 2015. By comparison, the financial markets have more than 100 years of history and there are numerous established business and accounting professionals, schools, information resources, tools, etc. Despite the established ‘market infrastructure’ of the financial markets, there are serious scandals and crises happening in recent years. A recent survey conducted by the GHG Management Institute and Sequence Staffing determined over 4 of 5 respondents believe there is a moderate to high risk that a scandal such as Enron will happen in the GHG markets”, said Tom Baumann.
“Recognizing the need for a training and professional organization with global reach, in 2007 ClimateCHECK and the GHG Experts Network co-founded the GHG Management Institute, as a 501c3 nonprofit and charitable organization with leaders including the World Resources Institute and the Carbon Disclosure Project. The Institute’s mission is to ‘train and develop a community of experts with the highest standards of professional practice in measuring, accounting, auditing, and managing greenhouse gas emissions’.”
